A New Way to Multitask on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is officially working on a major update for Android users that will change how we interact with notifications. Discovered in the latest beta versions (April 2026), the new Notification Bubbles feature brings a more seamless multitasking experience, similar to the "Chat Heads" we’ve known on Facebook Messenger for years.

The feature is designed to integrate deeply with the Android notification framework, allowing conversations to appear as floating icons on your screen.

How Do WhatsApp Notification Bubbles Work?

Floating Icons: When you receive a message, a small bubble with the contact's profile picture and a WhatsApp logo will appear.

Instant Replies: Tapping the bubble opens a compact, floating window. You can read and reply to messages without closing the video you're watching or the game you're playing.

System Integration: While supported since Android 10, WhatsApp is optimizing this specifically for Android 11 and above to ensure maximum stability.

Full Control: Users who find floating icons intrusive will be able to disable the feature entirely through the app's notification settings.

Major UI Overhaul: The End of the "WhatsApp" Text?

The notification bubbles aren't the only change coming to the interface. WhatsApp is also testing a significant redesign of the Top App Bar.

According to recent leaks, WhatsApp plans to replace the static "WhatsApp" text at the top of the chat list with its official green logo. This move, which has been in the works since late 2013, aims to create a cleaner, more minimal look. This extra space might also be used to integrate Status Updates directly into the main chat tab, similar to Instagram Stories.

Release Date: When Can You Try It?

Currently, the notification bubbles are under development and have started rolling out to select beta testers on the Google Play Beta Program. While an exact public release date hasn't been set, the feature is expected to reach the stable version for all Android users within the next few months.
